Ellin Leonard says
Regulate AI and Data Centers
Artificial intelligence may offer real benefits, but a technology this powerful needs real oversight. The idea that the AI industry can regulate itself simply doesn’t hold up. We don’t let other industries with this much influence over people’s lives grade their own work, and we shouldn’t start now. I support creating an independent public oversight entity and carefully crafted federal rules and regulations, written in the public interest. Some of the most knowledgeable and experienced people in the field have already warned us about the harms of unregulated AI, and we would be wise to listen.
The same care should guide how we treat data centers. I am firmly opposed to building any in the Mount Washington Valley. These facilities consume vast amounts of water, place an enormous demand on our electrical grid, and produce constant noise that would change the character of the neighborhoods around them. For Conway, that is a price too high to pay, and it is a non-starter.
That is why I support the statewide moratorium on new data center construction, and why I believe towns, like Conway, ultimately must have local control over this decision. The people who live here, who would hear the noise, share the water, and help pay for the power, should be the ones to decide what is built in their own community. I will always be open and honest with you about these choices, and I will fight to protect the Valley we love. My stand on AI is one of the reasons that the Sierra Club endorsed me. I would be honored to have your support too.
